First Communion
First Communion is the first time a baptized person receives the Eucharist, the sacrament in which Catholics believe the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.
It usually takes place after a period of preparation and instruction, often around second grade, when children are able to understand the difference between ordinary bread and the Eucharist. Through First Communion, the person is more fully united with Christ and the Church and begins regular participation in the sacramental life of the Church.
Guidelines for First Communion
- Students may begin preparation for First Communion no sooner than 2nd grade. If you are older than 2nd grade, please inform us so we can prepare for this circumstance.
- Students must attend weekly First Communion class through the Faith Formation Program.
- Students must provide a copy of their baptism certificate, if they were not baptized at St. Matthew's.
- Students will also receive the sacrament of reconciliation prior to their First Communion.
- The First Communion Mass is typically held on Mother's Day weekend in May.
