Anointing of the Sick
The Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing for those who are seriously ill, elderly, or facing major health challenges. It’s sometimes called “Last Rites” when given near the end of life, but it can be received any time someone is in danger due to sickness or old age.
Guidelines for Anointing of the Sick
Who Can Receive It
- Anyone who is seriously ill or elderly.
- Those facing major surgery or a serious medical procedure.
- Children who are capable of understanding the sacrament.
How It Is Received
- A priest administers the sacrament.
- The priest anoints the forehead and hands with holy oil (called the Oil of the Sick).
- He prays for healing, strength, and forgiveness, asking God to help the person in their illness.
- Sometimes, the sacrament is combined with prayers from family or friends for support.
